By Friday November 2, you should be well out of your candy coma from Halloween. Right? Okay, maybe not. Maybe you’re still drunk on sugar or the sauce, but that’s all right! The Fillmore has an excellent cure for a Halloween hangover and that just happens to be some pretty cool music. Starting at 8 pm, get your ass up to go see Brandi Carlile and Blitzen Trapper at The Fillmore. If you still feel like donning your costume ‘cause it was just that cool the first time around, go for it. I’m sure no one will notice.

Brandi Carlile is a country-rock sensation who has toured up and down the States with the dynamic Hanseroth twins, Phil and Tim. The three of them write, produce, and perform their songs and the result is a musical catalogue that has natural, undeniable chemistry. Carlile started performing at a young age, so one might say that music is in her bones. The three have earned their chops having played in coffee houses, bars, and the like before touring nationally. Carlile has toured with popular acts like The Avett Brothers, Ray LaMontagne, and Dave Matthews. She’s been hailed by several musicians like Sheryl Crow for her remarkable voice and talent. The most recent album, Bear Creek, was released in June 2012. The album harkens back to Carlile’s roots, literally. The studio of the same name in Woodenville, WA is close to Carlile’s home and proved to be a perfect setting for recording the album. With a rustic, almost unpolished sound, the record sounds similar to a live performance, which is exactly what Carlile and The Twins hoped for. Check them out on Friday for a first-hand glimpse of what’s sure to be a solid live performance.

Opening for Carlile is Blitzen Trapper, a Portland-based band that’s been around for quite some time although you may not have heard of them yet. They’ve been featured in Rolling Stone, Pitchfork, and Spin Magazine for their eclectic sound and for their albums Wild Mountain Nation (2007) and Furr (2008). The experimental country rockers have put out six studio albums since they banded together in the early 2000s. American Goldwing, their 2011 album, is their most recent to date. Band member Eric Earley noted on the band’s Facebook page that the album is reminiscent of the fine lines between suburban and rural American cultures, between a past that is inescapable and a future that is not yet determined. “True American nostalgia” is the word he used. A listen to the album indelibly cements that notion.
While Hurricane Sandy (or super-storm Sandy?) is doing its damnedest to keep them grounded in New York for a few more days, let’s hope the weather clears just enough to get them down to Charlotte for the Nov. 2 show. Carlile’s website mentions that for every ticket sold, she and the band donate $1 to The Looking Out Foundation, an organization that Carlile founded in 2008. The foundation helps to support the hungry and homeless, womens’ rights and education, public health, and the arts.

Show starts at 8 P.M. Tickets on sale for $29 General Admission
